Is A Tiled Conservatory Roof Right For Me?

If you’re thinking about converting your conservatory roof to a tiled roof solution, then you’ve come to the right place! We’re not here to sell our roof solution to you, but simply to provide you with some professional and friendly advice from within the trade. This is our blog after all, not our website!

“How do I know a tiled conservatory roof is right for me?”

If your conservatory is too cold in winter, and too hot in summer, you may want to consider a tiled roof. A fully tiled and insulated roof will ensure that no heat is lost through the roof during the cold winter months, however it also prevents the sun from heating up your conservatory during summer. It’s the perfect combination.

Most customers come to us as their glass/polycarbonate conservatory is unusable most year round. If this sounds familiar to you, a tiled roof may help turn your conservatory into a comfortable living space ALL year round. We no longer build new conservatories with a glass or polycarbonate roof, as they’re just not a cost effective home improvement.

Tiled Conservatory Roofs: Your FAQ’s Answered

We understand that making the leap from a traditional glass/polycarbonate roof to a tiled conservatory roof is a big deal. You want all of your questions answered before you make a decision, right? That’s why we’re here to help! Below are some of our most frequently asked questions, explained in detail, for complete peace of mind!

Image

“Will I lose much light if I opt for a tiled conservatory roof?”
It’s inevitable that some light will be lost, as we will be removing the glass roof.  However, we install 4-6 fire rated downlights in all of our roofs to provide you with more light. If you prefer natural light we can also fit additional Velux skylights. You can read more about downlights and skylights on the interior page of our website.

“Will you remove the glass or tile over it?”
We remove the glass or polycarbonate roof for a number of reasons: 1. To reduce the weight, 2. To prevent your conservatory from sweating, 3. To enable your roof to breath and 4. To provide sufficient depth to accommodate your new downlights.

“How are your conservatory roofs insulated?”
All of our roofs are insulated using TLX Silver – a multi foil insulation that gives us fantastic thermal properties without reducing the internal height of your conservatory.

“Will your roof solution be warmer than my existing polycarbonate/glass roof?”
Absolutely! Your new roof will be significantly warmer. Traditional conservatories often get too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Our insulation helps to retain heat providing a comfortable living space in all weather conditions.

“Do you completely remove the existing roof spars, and replace with new, to hold the weight of the new tiled roof?”
We do not feel it is necessary to remove your already existing roof spars. In most cases, they are more than adequate and structurally sound to accommodate the new replacement roof. We reinforce the roof with timber batons along each rafter. This provides us a secure fixing point for our tiles whilst increasing the structure of the overall roof.

“Do I need planning permission for a tiled conservatory roof?”
Not in most cases however each conservatory is different. We can inspect this during a survey but it is very unlikely you will need planning permission. If you would like to find out more about building regs check out this brochure.

The Benefits of a Tiled Conservatory Roof Over Traditional

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Tiled conservatory roofs are becoming increasingly popular here in the UK. One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is “what are the benefits of a tiled conservatory roof over a traditional glass conservatory roof?” Here’s the lowdown:

1. A Comfortable Living Space All Year Round – Your conservatory probably gets too hot during summer and too cold during winter, meaning it’s unsuitable for most of the year. Our Roof Solution at HomeSafe is fully tiled and insulated to keep the heat in during winter and prevent overheating during summer.

2. Tiled roof solutions are becoming increasingly popular due to their stylish design – Our roofs are fitted with Tapco Slate, a lightweight artificial slate alternative. Tapco offers a vast array of colour selections for a saturating richness, a blended colour for stunning dimension, or a hand-mixed variety of slate colours to present exclusive custom kerb appeal.

3. Save time – Tiled roofs require much less maintenance than traditional glass roofs.

4. Energy Efficient – They help to keep the heat in helping you save money on your heating bills. Be sure that your roof has  a low U Value. Roofs with high U Values conduct heat well, meaning you’ll have to spend more money on heating up your conservatory. The lower the U Value the better.

5. Adds more value to your property – much more than a traditional conservatory roof.
